Think of it like a language\u2014before we can write complex sentences, we need to understand our alphabet<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Physical Quantities: Fundamental vs. Derived<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In physics, all measurable quantities fall into one of two categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fundamental Quantities:<\/strong> These are the basic, independent building blocks of measurement, such as length, mass, and time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Derived Quantities:<\/strong> These are the &#8220;words&#8221; built from our fundamental alphabet. They are combinations of base blocks, creating quantities like velocity, acceleration, or force.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Historical Systems of Units to the Modern SI System<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Historically, the scientific community was completely divided on how to measure the world<sup><\/sup>. Different regions relied on entirely different classic measurement systems:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>CGS System:<\/strong> Measured in centimetres, grams, and seconds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>FPS System:<\/strong> The British system utilizing feet, pounds, and seconds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>MKS System:<\/strong> Measured in metres, kilograms, and seconds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To end the chaos and standardise global science, the world united in 1960 to establish the modern international standard: the <strong>SI System<\/strong> (Syst\u00e8me International d&#8217;Unit\u00e9s)<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SI system is built strictly upon seven base quantities<sup><\/sup>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Length (metre)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mass (kilogram)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Time (second)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electric Current (ampere)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thermodynamic Temperature (kelvin)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Amount of Substance (mole)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Luminous Intensity (candela)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Dimensionless Exception: Supplementary Units (Radian &amp; Steradian)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NTA loves to test exceptions on the NEET exam<sup><\/sup>! In addition to the seven base quantities, there are two extra quantities known as Supplementary Units, specifically used for geometric angles<sup><\/sup>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Plane Angle ($\\theta$):<\/strong> Measured in radians.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Solid Angle ($\\Omega$):<\/strong> Measured in steradians.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>High-Yield NEET Trap:<\/strong> Both the radian and steradian possess highly defined SI units, but they are completely dimensionless quantities (possessing dimensions of $M^0L^0T^0$)<sup><\/sup>. This happens because they are defined as ratios of similar quantities (like arc length divided by radius length), causing the dimensions to completely cancel out<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Strict NCERT Guidelines for Writing SI Units (The Grammar of Physics)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to survive tricky assertion-reason questions, you must memorize the &#8220;Grammar of Physics&#8221;<sup><\/sup>. Here are the strict NCERT spelling and notation rules:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Capitalization Rules and The Litre Exception<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When writing a unit named after a scientist, the full word is <strong>never<\/strong> capitalized. You must write &#8220;newton&#8221; or &#8220;joule&#8221; in all lowercase.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, the symbol for a scientist&#8217;s unit <strong>is<\/strong> capitalized (e.g., <strong>N<\/strong> for newton, <strong>J<\/strong> for joule, <strong>A<\/strong> for ampere).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For standard units not named after a scientist, both the full word and the symbol remain lowercase (e.g., metre and <strong>m<\/strong>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Exception:<\/strong> The single major exception is the litre. It uses a capital <strong>L<\/strong> so it does not get visually confused with the Arabic numeral 1.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plurals and Punctuation Rules<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Unit symbols are completely unaltered in plural form. You can never stack prefixes.
